Listen to your knowledgeable tour guide as he/she informs you about the island’s history and culture as you drive through George Town, the capital. Drive past historic buildings and landmarks, including Fort George, and the beautiful Seven Mile Beach lined with luxurious condos and hotels. Have a brief photo opportunity outside of the Governor’s Residence before continuing to the district of West Bay where you’ll see a historic Cayman house resembling a gingerbread house. Stop at the Cayman Turtle Farm where you will have the opportunity to hold and photograph turtles and see a turtle weighting in excess of 600 lbs.! Continue on, and sample rum cake and fruit juices at the famous Tortuga Rum Cake Outlet before proceeding to the town of Hell where you’ll see an interesting rock formation. Conclude your excursion in George Town, next to the pier; browse the shops and enjoy duty free shopping before returning to your ship.

Cross the rope bridge over the pond. Watch the colors of the Caribbean come alive as you interact with the parrots and macaws in the bird sanctuary. Hold and play with spider monkeys, white face monkeys, and a howler monkey in the Monkey Refuge. Explore the history of the pirates at Coxen’s Cave. Roam through the botanical gardens where you will discover the indigenous plants of this region. Plunge into the pristine waters of the Caribbean or relax under the canopy of the trees. Head back to the pier along the coastal road.

Xunantunich Mayan Ruins

Julie is super excited about this one!! Your journey begins with a relaxing scenic journey to the Mopan River, passing several villages and towns along the way, and then a 5-minute ferry ride across the river to access the remote ruins. Situated just two miles from the Guatemala border, this site was a major ceremonial center during the Classic Period composed of six major plazas and surrounded by more than 25 temples and palaces. Sitting atop a natural limestone ridge, the site provides panoramic views of the hilly Cayo District. The Introductory Site History and Display Center is found at the entrance to the center and is one of the major attractions. The largest temple, El Castillo, has been excavated and partially restored; it is famous for its frieze, a banded stucco decoration that at one time extended around the entire pyramid. Delve into the Mayan world as you visit the site’s three plazas and partially excavated ball court. After exploring this ancient Mayan site, you will return to the San Ignacio area for a local lunch before heading back with wonderful memories of Belize and its ancient Mayan history.
