We will head to Playa del Carmen to explore the natural treasures of the Riviera Maya. Our first stop of the day will be a magnificent cenote, a natural sinkhole that exposes groundwater underneath, for a refreshing and exhilarating swim. We will explore the underground, crystal-clear pools and awe-inspiring rock formations. The we will head to the stunning bay of Akumal, meaning "Place of the Turtles" in Mayan, best known for its white-sand beach, first-class snorkeling and, of course, the sea turtles. We will enjoy a snorkeling session, exploring the bay’s clear waters, looking out for colorful coral, tropical fish and graceful turtles in their natural habitat. We'll wrap up this amazing day with a delicious beach side lunch and downtime before returning to the ship.

Belize: XUNANTUNICH MAYAN RUINS

We will discover the magic of Xunantunich, a famous Mayan archeological site situated just two miles from the Guatemala border. This site was a major ceremonial center during the Classic Period composed of six major plazas and surrounded by more than 25 temples and palaces. Sitting atop a natural limestone ridge, the site provides panoramic views of the hilly Cayo District. The largest temple, El Castillo, has been excavated and partially restored; it is famous for its frieze, a banded stucco decoration that at one time extended around the entire pyramid. We will delve into the Mayan world as we visit the site’s three plazas and partially excavated ball court. After exploring this ancient Mayan site, we will return to the San Ignacio area for a local lunch.

We will escape to Maya Key for the day. Maya Key is an 11+ acre oasis of pristine beaches, lush gardens, tropical waters and the Meso-American coral reef. Experiences include an animal rehabilitation and rescue facility with jaguars, ocelots, monkeys, and reptiles. We will also be able to snorkel with sharks! We can explore the Mayan ball court and plazas, interpretation center, and art exhibits. Island chefs serve up some of their own recipes in a traditional island picnic served buffet style overlooking the pool, beach and the Caribbean sea.

We will learn to make authentic Mexican salsas and guacamole, drink margaritas AND learn how to dance salsa on the beach! We will stop at a beach restaurant with a beautiful view for a hand’s-on cooking class. Our guide will take us through the steps of making authentic Mexican salsas and guacamole from the freshest ingredients. Afterwards, our guide will show us how to step, sway and get into the groove of Latin America’s most famous dance- the Salsa!
