Caverns by Jeep & Beach Combo

Begin your Carnival cruise shore excursion with a 45-minute ferry ride from Cozumel to the snow-white beaches of Playa del Carmen on the Mexican mainland. Travel Jurassic Park style by Jeep for an hour through a lush savanna of palm trees, Mayan Ceiba trees and gum trees—from which the Mayans created chewing gum. Your Caverns by Jeep & Beach Combo Excursion has begun! Your caravan halts in the jungle as you search for the hidden underground world of the lost Mayan civilization. Descend into Chac Tun Cavern past striking stalactite and stalagmite formations as your bilingual guide describes its fascinating history. Spend the next hour and a half exploring the cool, dark mysteries of Chac Tun. This ancient cavern and cenote (cavern pool) was a sacred place to the Mayans. Your guides regale you with stories about the ritual sacrifices that took place in these deep natural wells. The Mayans believed the cenotes were a spiritual underworld and used them for sacrificial ceremonies of purification and rejuvenation. It’s time to test the waters! Whether you ease into the pool on foot, take a running leap, or use the stairs, the cool water (fed by underground rivers) feels refreshing in the Mexican heat. Armed with a flashlight, hard-hat, snorkel and goggles, you’re free to float around the cavern pool beneath a canopy of stalagmites and stalactites. Feel the soft limestone on the pool bottom. Leave the mysteries of Chac Tun behind and head back into the Mexican sun.
